• Enabling Skill India Mission objectives, the partnership aims to train young people in a work-integrated format that supports their employment and retention
New Delhi – May 16, 2022 – The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the nodal agency of the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Medhavi Skills University jointly develop and promote work-integrated and skill-integrated degree courses (Bachelor of Professional Studies – B. Voc/Diploma in Vocation – D. Voc). These courses will be implemented through the NSDC’s network of training partners/training centers and in association with the incorporated industries of the university.
The MoU was signed by Ved Mani Tiwari, Chief Operating Officer and Officiating Chief Executive Officer, NSDC and Pravesh Dudani, Founder and Chancellor of Medhavi Skills University, New Delhi.
The partnership is aimed at pupils who have completed the 10th or 12th year of school education. It will enable students to obtain a degree/degree recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as well as practical work experience in industries related to their education. On-the-Job Training (OJT) will be linked to monthly stipends paid by the respective industries to trainees, making university courses very affordable and beneficial for disadvantaged groups of students who are at risk of dropping out of higher education. These courses will also create a conducive ecosystem and fulfill the objectives of the Skill India mission, as they are designed to provide young people with industry-relevant skills.
The NSDC will leverage its network to launch degree and diploma degree courses through on-the-job training or OJT at the employer’s premises. The training partners/training centers would facilitate student enrollments at the university, and after their basic training at skill centers, students would join the designated industry as trainees and undergo hands-on OJT training while working in the workshop. Alongside their practical training, the university will organize theoretical courses according to the “Phygital” model by combining physical lessons, live virtual lessons and self-paced learning through the university’s learning management system.
Commenting on the strategic partnership, Ved Mani Tiwari, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Officials Officer, NSDC said, “The collaboration with Medhavi Skills University aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the skills ecosystem with the introduction of long-term degree-supported skills courses in the ‘learn by winning’ fashion. Students will be able to gain hands-on experience while working in reputable industries as interns and earn stipends for their contribution to production and services. The collaboration is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisages the convergence of vocational training with higher education pathways followed by individual institutions.
the ‘learn by winning’ This model is being actively promoted as part of NEP 2020 as it ensures hands-on learning while working on the job. Specific guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC) encourage the integration of OJT apprenticeships/internships/training as a curriculum component of skills courses. As interns contribute to industry service production/output during CTF, employers provide a stipend which allows students to earn money.
Pravesh Dudani, Founding Chancellor of Medhavi Skills University said: “The current model of short-term vocational training presents a unique challenge of restricted career growth for students due to lack of higher education qualification. With the university’s Work Integrated Skills & Higher Education (WISE) model, applicants will earn a bachelor’s degree/diploma (B. Voc/D. Voc) recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as well as practical work experience which has significant potential to catapult their long-term career progression.
Occasionally present, Kuldip Sarma, Pro-Chancellor of Medhavi Skills University said, “The university’s WISE model envisions providing equitable access to disadvantaged applicants to excel in their careers who cannot afford traditional full-time higher education. Through the collaboration of NSDC, MSU plans to empower 5 lakh disadvantaged youth over the next three years through various work-integrated training and education approaches.
