Washington, DC, July 06 10, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — American Humane, the nation’s premier national animal welfare organization and the world’s largest certifier of animal welfare practices, today announced that the Adtalem Global Education Foundation has awarded them a $50,000 grant to support its Pups4Patriots program. Pups4Patriots provides free, specially trained service dogs to veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injury.
“Our Pups4Patriots program is transforming the lives of veterans suffering from the invisible wounds of war by pairing them with highly trained service dogs at no cost to the veteran,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of the management of American Humane. “We cannot help veterans in need without the incredible support of organizations like Adtalem. This generous donation will make a real difference in the lives of veterans by placing a lifesaving leash in their hands so they have a combat companion by their side every day.
All proceeds from the grant will benefit this vital program, which trains qualified dogs, including rescue dogs, to become service animals for veterans in need. American Humane has provided service dogs and training to more than 200 veterans across the country.
“No matter your limitations, whatever your physical or mental challenges, a service dog will be the best thing for you,” said Charles, a U.S. Army veteran and Pups4Patriots graduate, after completing his training. “It will help you break out of that shell you’ve put yourself in over time.”
Service dogs are an invaluable asset to veterans who have experienced trauma, but there are significant barriers to obtaining a dog. Properly training a dog to perform necessary tasks and stay calm and focused in public spaces can be both expensive and time-consuming, with costs that can exceed $30,000 per dog. Even when cost isn’t a barrier, wait times can still be prohibitive. Through the Pups4Patriot program, American Humane provides free service dogs to veterans quickly and efficiently.
“The Adtalem Global Education Foundation truly appreciates the value of the Pups4Patriots program,” said Sean Callanan, MVB, Dean of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Adtalem Global Education Foundation Board Member. “We have seen time and time again how pets have a positive impact on human physical, mental and emotional well-being and to be able to provide an animal companion to a veteran in need is truly an invaluable gift. “
“We cannot thank Adtalem enough for their kind support,” said Dr. Ganzert. “With their help, we can harness the healing powers of the human-animal bond and change the lives of these brave veterans forever.”
