The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is pleased to release program highlights for its third World Conference on Education (2022 GEC) which will begin on September 20 in Sydney, Australia. With our hosts, Sports Integrity Australia (SIA), we have planned a varied and impactful three-day event for a record number of more than 300 participants from around the world, including more than 40 speakers.
Here are some highlights of what awaits attendees.
Australian water polo Olympian Bronwen Knox joins as emcee
We are pleased to confirm that four-time Olympian Bronwen Knox will be our emcee throughout the conference. Bronwen has been a top water polo athlete for 20 years. She is a two-time Olympic bronze medalist and the most capped player with 394 caps for Australia. She has also won several medals at World Cups and FINA Championships.
Alongside her sporting career, Bronwen is a barrister at the Supreme Court of Queensland. She is passionate about athletes knowing their rights and understanding their value. She also works as an educational presenter in the areas of sport integrity and respectful behavior. Bronwen holds positions on numerous boards, committees and advisory groups including: Olympic Council of Queensland, SIA Athlete Advisory Group and Water Polo Australia Athletes Commission (Chair). Explore innovations and trends in anti-doping education
The Conference program is designed for organizations and their practitioners to deepen their own sport education approaches, connect with other participants, hear the latest social science research, and learn about the rich heritage of our host country. Plenary sessions and workshops will cover the following topics and more:
- athlete vulnerability
- own sports behaviors
- design learning
- educate throughout the athlete’s journey
- digital education
- train athlete support personnel
- event education
- evaluate the impact of the program
- social science research
Beyond Interaction with WADA Education Committeeleadership and education teams, attendees will hear from speakers from around the world who bring their unique expertise and perspectives. They join the Conference of National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs) of Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, India, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway , Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the United States); International Federations; academia and other key sectors of the anti-doping ecosystem.
On September 19, Sports Integrity Australia organizes an open day and, on September 22, it organizes a Innovation Day, which will present new approaches to learning. During Innovation Day, WADA will host “Regional Conversations”, providing the Agency with an opportunity to improve regional relationships, share best practices and help solve regional challenges.
Networking and social events honoring Australia’s rich traditional heritage
The conference program also includes many opportunities for attendees to network, visit Sydney and learn about Australia’s rich traditional heritage:
- The SIA Open Day and GEC 2022 Welcome Reception will be held at Australian National Maritime Museum
- The conference, being held at the International Convention Center, will open with a “Welcome to Our Country” ceremony performed by Indigenous traditional guardians.
- The second day’s gala dinner will take place on the Starship Sydney, which will sail through the historic harbour.
